Since the pandemic started, I haven't slept a full night. Early on, I believed the nocturnal restlessness was purely due to my anxiety about how vulnerable and unprepared we all were for the Coronavirus, especially in a city like New York.
But that explanation has faded over the years as sleeplessness and I have learned to coexist and much of the world moved on. The silence of inactivity, the passing cars over the metal construction plate outside the apartment, my cat purring in the darkness, the occasional moon in the window, and I are all there together now.
I fill these nocturnal hours with bursts of work, listening, reading, scrolling, or meditating. Sometimes I record music as Lost Waves, an attempt to find the sounds, harmonies, and textures that let my thoughts drift.
"A Way" is one such single, recorded in June, 2023 in Brooklyn. It's available now on Bandcamp and in six days on streaming platforms. Presave on Spotify
The video for "A Way" was created with Runway's Gen-2 and some light editing in After Effects. The evolution of generative AI is fascinating to me, particularly its power to enhance our creativity. Thematically this video is about a way of being present through the bursts of life and the spaces between.
Thanks for reading and listening! ✌️ -Mark
